Private lessons at Voxbox Camden studios

Private lessons are of 30 mins or 60 minutes duration which includes 5 minutes change-over. To get the most from your lesson, we recommend that you arrive a few minutes before your alloted time.

We ask that you pay for your first lesson in advance, which you may do online or with Voxbox reception. All subsequent lessons can be paid with your teacher on the day.

Please Note: If you need to cancel a booked lesson, you must give 24 hours notice to avoid being charged.

Our 4 teaching suites are fully equipped with mics and monitors and a diverse list of backing tracks with lyrics for you to choose from, or alternatively you may bring your own to sing along to. We also advise that you bring some kind of recording device, so that you can record your lesson to assist your practice at home.

Choosing a teacher

Speech Level Singing

SLS is a way of using your voice that allows you to sing freely and clearly throughout your range, with a balanced tone and with no gaps or breaks

To help you find the right person, we have provided comprehensive information for each teacher, with details of their experience and musical influences - we hope this makes it easier for you to choose.

Our teachers are regularly assessed every year by the top SLS teachers from the US and are issued with a certificate, as proof that they continue to offer you the best teaching skills at every level. While price is an indicator of experience teaching this technique, all Voxbox teachers are specialists at vocal development and know how to identify and smooth breaks in the voice, build power, improve range and tone.

How often for how long?

You can take lessons once a week, fornightly or just occasionally. How quickly you make progress depends on many factors, not just how often or long your lessons are.

Some people enjoy taking lessons, some people just want to fix their voices as quickly and cost-effectively as possible: if singing is a hobby, you may like to come for the longer lessons,  as hour lessons give you more time to actually work on songs.

For simply fixing and inproving your voice, half-hours once a week are better than an hour every second week. Also, half-hours with a more experienced teacher may be better than less frequent hours. Your needs may differ, and may change over time. Your teacher will advise you on the best study programme.

Your First Lesson

In your first lesson, your teacher will have a conversation with you as to your vocal history i.e. if you have had any previous training, sung in a choir, with bands etc. to establish what you want from your voice. If you have any vocal issues, this is the time to spill the beans!

It doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or a professional, your teacher will assess your needs right away. They will usually ask you to sing up and down a scale, using different vowels to hear where you voice sits, general tone and texture. You will then start to work with your voice using the SLS techniques they think are appopriate. These exercises may seem strange at first, but perservere with them, as they are purposefully designed to build a solid foundation to your voice.

Once you have worked on a few vocal exercises your teacher will suggest a song, either one that you have brought with you or one from our list of backing tracks. You then apply the exercises that you learned in the first half of the lesson to your song.

Please bear in mind that every singer responds differently to vocal instruction. The singing voice is an advanced physical skill which depends largely on the singer's ability to work subtly and accurately with the muscles and elements of the vocal tract. How easily you will develop this ability depends on innumerable factors, but you can be sure that all Voxbox teachers are knowlegeable and experienced in facilitating this learning process.
