About your voice

Quick facts.......
Disclaimer:
This a of course an extremely
simplified and generalised
overview of the voice.
If you want to know more,
speak to a professional SLS teacher.
  • The breath needs to provide just the right amount of pressure to vibrate the cords strongly.
  • Vocal Cords should vibrate strongly against each other... if not, the voice will be breathy.
  • All elements of vocal function can be enormously improved by regular use of correctly selected exercises & development tools.
  • Across the range of pitch, all voices are divided up into zones or registers. In between the registers are the bridges, places in the voice where there is a feeling of a shift. Many singers have trouble at these points.
  • With the correct balance of air & muscle, singers can learn to sing through their bridges with a strong connected voice. Some people do this naturally, most have to learn.

Here's a short set of questions designed to make you more aware of your voice and to give you a brief glimpse of how an SLS teacher will plan your vocal development.

On the whole, how does your voice sound?

Breathy To produce a strong sound the vocal cords need to close properly. With the correct exercise, cord closure can be properly balanced with the flow of air.
Strong, natural & expressive across my entire range, at any volume quiet to loud, with a natural vibrato. Well done! You must have worked hard for that...probably with an SLS teacher, right? We're here to help you maintain that great balance and improve your styling.
Nasal When the voice is balanced and relaxed the words (vowels and consonants) can be properly formed and will resonate with a natural, balanced, strong sound.
Harsh, and tight or nasal on the top notes. When the larynx rises and the thorat constricts it becomes difficult to sing. This very often happens when reaching for high notes. Singers can learn to allow the larynx to remain at speech level, balancing the sound right across the vocal range.

Weak, and I keep running out of breath By learning to balance the flow of air against the closure of the cords you will develop a strong tone with good sustain and mobility.
OK at the bottom but weak & airy on the high notes By working through the correct vocal exercises, you can learn to maintain cord closure and resonance through the bridges and connect all the parts of your range.
Easy, agile, strong and fit. I have a wide palette of tonal shadings, with easy sustains & accurate pitch. Well I guess you are working out regularly...probably with the help of a good teacher.
Tight and constricted, especially when I try to sing high You may be "stuck" on one of the bridges.. the place in the voice where you feel a change, like shifting gears, as you sing up the pitches.
How does your voice feel in the morning after a gig?

Tired and I can't find my high notes You need to think hard about your vocal health. Consulting a professional teacher would be a great start
Hoarse - I really can't sing for a few days after a big gig
